Several weeks of speculation have led to the CEO of Facebook’s parent company, Meta, announcing an employee layoff of 11,000 people.
Thousands of Meta employees will be laid off, CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed on Wednesday. Zuckerberg wrote on Meta’s official website that 11,000 employees will be laid off, about 13 percent of the company’s total force. Just days after Twitter, which Elon Musk bought, fired nearly half of its employees, Meta moved too.
Although both companies’ layoffs have been different, Zuckerberg says it is the hardest decision he’s ever had to make. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are all owned by Meta. Just to give you some context, Meta was the company that laid off so many employees at once. In India, Meta is also laying off some employees due to job cuts in its offices around the world.
“My team has been cut by about 13 percent and more than 11,000 talented employees have been let go. These are some of the hardest changes I’ve ever made at Meta. We’re also Meta. We’re cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1 in an effort to be leaner and more efficient.
Meta’s employees are being asked to leave under Zuckerberg’s watch, and he’s taking full responsibility for it. It’s hard for everyone, and I feel especially sorry for those affected. “I want to take responsibility for these decisions and for how we got here.”

Zuckerberg said the company is keeping email addresses active throughout the day so everyone can say goodbye. Given the amount of sensitive information, the company disabled most meta systems.
Employees affected by the layoffs will receive an email explaining what it means to them. Then, employees can speak to someone to get their questions answered.
Basically, Meta’s CEO said employees in the US would get 16 weeks of severance pay and two extra weeks for every year they worked. Those who are affected will get all the PTO they have, vested November 15, 2022, six months of health care costs, and three months of career support.
Immigration assistance has also been provided to affected employees. “I know it’s tough if you’re here on a visa.” There will be time for everyone to plan and work out their immigration status.” There will be a notice period and some visa grace period before expiration. In the blog post, Zuckerberg said, “We have immigration experts that will help you based on what you and your family need.”
There will also be support for employees outside the United States. The company said it’d take into account local employment laws as it shares country-specific details.
Meta laid off people because it wanted to cut costs. It capped hiring and reduced infrastructure costs (closing offices, etc.).
“Placements will be affected disproportionately as we plan to hire fewer people next year,” Zuckerberg announced. “The leader of each group will set aside time for us to talk about what this means for your team over the next few days. We’re restructuring our business teams even more. This isn’t a reflection of the great work these teams have done, but of us needing to move forward.”
